
Research equity, scholar mobility, digital collaboration, and the role of higher education in addressing global challenges.
The STAR Scholars Global Conference 2025 was successfully hosted by Istanbul Aydın University (IAU) in October 2025, bringing together international scholars, academic leaders, and institutional partners to explore the future of inclusive and transnational higher education.
Organised in collaboration with the STAR Scholars Network and supported by IAU’s UNESCO Chair on Cultural Diplomacy, Governance, and Education, the 2025 conference provided a vibrant platform for exchanging knowledge and building global academic partnerships.
Day 1 – Pre-Conference Activities
The day before the conference started consisted of workshops and a guided tour to historical sites in Istanbul. The Ebru Artwork Workshop allowed the participants to both be creative and explore Turkish art culture.
There was also a culinary workshop this day, where the esteemed guests learnt how to cook Turkish food.
To conclude the day, academic wellness training was facilitated in the IAU Campus’ Sporting Hall – a great way to manage academically related stress and burnout.

Day 2 – Opening Ceremonies, Workshops, and Boat Dinner
The Opening Ceremony inaugurated the STAR Global Conference 2025 with remarks from university and STAR Scholars Network leaders emphasizing unity, innovation, and international academic collaboration. Dr. Osman Gültekin highlighted intercultural understanding and educational cooperation, while senior academic representatives and UNESCO leadership delivered additional greetings underscoring interdisciplinary engagement in higher education.
The keynote address by Prof. Dr. Lynn Pasquerella focused on ethical leadership, academic freedom, and global responsibility. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the Presidential Medals for Excellence and Service, the Nancy Zimpher Travel Awards, and the Global Education for Peace Award to the American University in the Emirates.
As part of the STAR Global Conference 2025 cultural program, the Bosphorus Boat Dinner offered participants an exceptional opportunity to experience Istanbul’s unique geographic and cultural identity. While sailing between the European and Asian shores, guests enjoyed a selection of traditional Turkish dishes and scenic views of the illuminated city. The evening also featured a Whirling Dervish performance and a Ney recital, representing Türkiye’s rich artistic and spiritual heritage.

Day 3 – Panel Discussions
Throughout the three-day program, the conference featured 19 panels and more than 150 research presentations, providing an interdisciplinary platform for scholars, educators, and professionals from around the world. Discussions addressed themes such as education and global citizenship, sustainability and innovation, communication and technology, translation and cultural studies, and leadership in international development, highlighting how higher education, culture, and technology intersect in shaping inclusive and globally connected societies.
A central theme across the panels was the role of local knowledge in generating global social impact. Presentations explored how traditional knowledge, intercultural competence, and international collaboration can support sustainable development and educational innovation. Sessions also examined topics such as globalizing higher education, the use of artificial intelligence in learning, environmental responsibility, and cultural inclusion, reinforcing the conference’s vision of linking local perspectives with global academic cooperation.

Day 4 – Workshops and Closing Ceremony
The STAR Global Conference 2025 featured 10 thematic workshops and roundtables that created an interactive space for academic dialogue, professional exchange, and practical learning. The sessions addressed key issues in contemporary higher education, including global university collaboration, equity in science, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in research and teaching. Discussions also explored inclusive and internationally connected learning approaches such as cross-sector collaboration, collaborative online international learning (COIL), multilingual communication, and the ethical use of generative AI, highlighting how academic cooperation and local knowledge can contribute to global frameworks of innovation, inclusion, and sustainability.
The Closing Ceremony marked the conclusion of the STAR Global Conference 2025, during which certificates were awarded and appreciation was expressed to participants, volunteers, and organizing partners for their contributions to the event. Delegates and organizing committee members also thanked Istanbul Aydın University for hosting the conference, highlighting the importance of international collaboration and the conference’s core vision of connecting local knowledge with global perspectives. The ceremony concluded with reflections on the value of cooperation and academic exchange, encouraging participants to continue advancing global dialogue and collaboration in their future work.

Day 5 & 6 – Post-Conference Tour to Capadoccia
To conclude the STAR Scholars Global Conference 2025, the participants visited Capadoccia – one of Türkiye’s many ancient wonders. The visit included guided tours of Göreme Open-Air Museum, the historical cave dwellings, and the region’s unique volcanic formations. In addition, the participants had the opportunity to experience hot-air balloon flight – providing a spectaular view of Türkiye’s natural and cultural heritage.
